After installing SafeLogon I realized that now I have to log on twice - one using the standard Windows Logon procedure and another using SafeLogon. How can I configure the system so that I only have to log on using SafeLogon?

Whenever I enable the "Windows Security related tweaks:" option in the "Restrictions" tab for any user and without enabling any tweak in the list, I see that some icons and commands, which were previously hidden are now shown when that user logs on, e.g. the "Network Neighborhood" icon on the desktop, the "Run..." and "Log Off..." commands in the Start menu, etc. How can I avoid this?

Q. After installing SafeLogon I realized that now I have to log on twice - one using the standard Windows Logon procedure and another using SafeLogon. How can I configure the system so that I only have to log on using SafeLogon?

A.
SafeLogon is not intended to replace the Windows built-in authentication system but for enhancing and complementing it with features it does not have, e.g. restricting the day of the week and time of the day certain user is allowed to log on or applying some security related tweaks.

However, there are some workarounds depending on the Windows version you use. See below.

In Windows NT, 2000 or XP you cannot disable the user accounts as they are part of the built-in authentication and protection system used by the system Administrator to set up different protection profiles to users. However, you could create a "generic user" account without administrative privileges (to prevent users from accessing protected resources) and later use the "autologon" feature, which can be easily set up using the "Tweak UI" tool provided by Microsoft as part of the well-known Microsoft PowerToys. In other words, follow the steps:

1) Install and configure SafeLogon using administrative privileges first.

2) Create a "generic user" account in your system without administrative privileges.

3) Download the "Tweak UI" tool.

For Windows XP from:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler
/Install/2/WXP/
EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

For Windows NT and 2000 from:

http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads
/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp

4) Install and run the "Tweak UI" tool, locate the Logon options and enable the "Log on automatically at system startup" option. Type the 'User name' and 'Password' you used when creating the "generic user" account.

5) Now your system will be automatically logged on using the "generic user" account and users will only have to manually log on using SafeLogon.

In Windows 95, 98 or Me
you can disable the Windows Logon prompt by following the steps:

1) Left-click the Start menu, mouse-over Settings, and single-click the Control Panel.

2) In the Control Panel, double-click on the Network icon.

3) In the Primary Network Logon, choose Windows Logon.

4) Press OK.

5) In the Control Panel double-click the Passwords icon.

6) Click Change Passwords tab.

7) Press Change Windows Password button.

8) Type your current password in the Old Password box.

9) Leave both the New Password and Confirm New Password boxes blank.

10) Click OK.

11) Select the User Profile tab and make sure the "All users of this PC use the same preferences and desktop settings" is selected.

12) Click OK.

13) Restart Windows.

14) Now the users will only have to log on using SafeLogon.

A.
Once you enable the "Windows Security related tweaks:" option in the "Restrictions" tab for any user you are telling the program to apply all the tweaks in the list, enabling the ones that are checked and removing the rest. Therefore, make sure you enable (check) the needed tweaks in the list to obtain the desired results, e.g. locate in the list and check the "Remove Run menu from Start Menu", "Remove Log Off command from Start Menu" and "Hide Network Neighborhood/My Network Places icon on desktop" options if you want to hide or remove the corresponding icon or command.
